As long as I can remember I have been told that you become trained in a skill, find work in that field, and then the longer you work the more you will make.  The more experience you have the better your pay will be.  Well, I have just seen how that is no longer the case.  In 2000, took a course and learned how to become a medical transcriptionist.  In 2001, I was lucky enough to find a mentor and started typing oncology reports.  The very first doctor I typed was located in Arlington, Texas and I averaged nine cents per 65 character line and was averaging no less than $200 a day as a newbie.  This past month I started working for a company and got to type reports for that same doctor in Arlington, but now I am only making five cents a line and barely $100 per day.  What is wrong with this picture?  I mean I didn’t expect to be making a lot more than I was eleven years ago, but I sure didn’t expect to be making half as much.  I guess there are several factors that work into this situation…voice recognition, outsourcing to India, scribes who follow doctors around and type as they talk, mommies who want to stay home and accept next to nothing pay…now at 50+ I am becoming a dinosaur in my field and really have no desire to go back to school, but have no exit plan to do something else.  This is not where I planned to be at this point in my life, but you know there are thousands of us out there, the displaced worker, the people whose expertise is outdated or been phased out, those people who did what they were suppose to do, followed the path they were told to, and now they can’t even pay their bills.

I mean have you looked at the people serving you food at the fast food chains or checking out your groceries at the local food mart?  They are getting older and older.  I do believe the cashier the other night at Wal-mart was 80 years old.  She looked like someone’s great grandmother who really didn’t need to be standing on her feet checking people out at 9 p.m., but she probably lost her retirement or for some reason needs the extra to pay her bills and keep the lights on.

I am at a loss as to where I need to go from here, but there is an answer….of course having a different president would help immensely, but since that’s not an option guess I will have to start doing my research and figure out what I want to do and where to go, as the road I am currently on is definitely becoming a dead end one….till next time…
